Description

OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE

The 1974 Volkswagen Type 181, commonly known as The Thing, was originally developed for military use before being adapted for civilian markets. Its utilitarian design, removable doors, fold-flat windshield, and rugged construction made it a standout among VW’s lineup. Sold in the United States from 1973 to 1974, The Thing offered a unique blend of off-road capability and quirky charm.

This example 1974 Volkswagen Thing, with a believed-to-be original 37,557 miles, is finished in vibrant Pumpkin Orange with white steels wheels adorned with polished VW-embossed center caps, accentuating its playful character, this Thing presents highly original, with noteworthy straight body panels and clean undercarriage, reflecting careful use and storage.

The interior is equally tidy with black vinyl with a replacement vinyl folding soft top devoid of tears and retains a clear and unbroken plastic rear window. Mechanically, the seller notes the vehicle starts, stops, and drives well, with a smooth-shifting four-speed manual transmission. While it has been stored for several years, the battery is relatively new, and the car would benefit from a tune-up and inspection before regular driving.
