Description
The 1973 Plymouth Barracuda represented the fourth year of Chrysler’s E-body pony car, with styling updates that included larger rubber-faced bumper guards and a revised grille and taillights. The ’Cuda 340 remained a favorite among enthusiasts for its blend of performance and value. Powered by a 340-cubic-inch small-block V8 rated at 240 net horsepower, it featured a four-barrel carburetor and could be paired with either a TorqueFlite automatic or a four-speed manual transmission. Development Engineer Charles “Pete” Hagenbuch summed up the 340 engine: “As for design, all I can tell you is big valves, a big cam, and a high compression ratio… we threw the book at it and most of it worked.”
Performance highlights included Rallye suspension, dual exhaust, and optional “Hemi-style” stripes. Electronic ignition became standard in 1973, improving reliability. Despite declining muscle car sales, the ’Cuda 340 still delivered spirited performance, as Bud Lindemann noted on his Car and Track TV show (1973): “Out of the hole, our 340 cubic incher produced a 0 to 30 run in 3.6 seconds… Stability was excellent through a difficult reverse camber turn at 70 miles an hour.”
This automatic-equipped 1973 ’Cuda 340 has been with the seller since 2011 and was restored roughly 12 years ago in its original colors. It’s located at Hagerty Garage + Social in Savannah, Georgia, and is now offered on behalf of the current owner by a Broad Arrow Specialist with a Bill of Sale.
