The 1971 Ford Bronco equipped with a Four Wheel Camper is a rare and innovative piece of early SUV history. Offered during the first-generation Bronco era (1966–1977), these campers were not factory options but aftermarket conversions by Four Wheel Campers of Colorado, typically installed through dealers. By 1971, the design had matured into a lightweight pop-up unit that replaced the Bronco’s hardtop, creating a compact, go-anywhere adventure rig. 

The camper featured a fabric-sided pop-up roof, rear-door entry, and practical amenities: a couch, overhead bed, removable table, faux-wood cabinetry, sink, cooler, and dual-burner stove—essentially turning the Bronco into a mini motorhome. Built on the rugged U15 wagon chassis, it retained full off-road capability with a 302-cubic-inch V8, three-speed manual transmission, dual-range transfer case, manual locking hubs, and four-wheel drum brakes. 

Though never an official Ford option, these conversions targeted outdoor enthusiasts and remained available into the early 1980s. Production numbers were never published, but experts estimate fewer than 100 were built, with only a handful surviving today.

Finished in Prairie Yellow, this Bronco adds modern touches like 15-inch aluminum wheels, BFGoodrich All-Terrain tires, and a Blaupunkt stereo — making it a true pioneer of overlanding.
