Description

Plymouth introduced the Belvedere GTX hardtop and convertible submodels in 1967, marketing the new GTX as a "gentleman's muscle car" that featured both luxury and power. By the following year, having firmly established itself in the muscle car market, the car dropped the Belvedere reference, was simply called the Plymouth GTX, and received a new hourglass body design.

Following minor cosmetic changes in 1969, the 1970 GTX received a new grille and taillight design, made the "Air Grabber" hood (with a functional air intake system) a standard feature, and discontinued the convertible option. The engine continued to be the 440 cubic-inch V8, known as the "Super Commando 440," which could be upgraded to a six-barrel V-code for additional horsepower. For those seeking even more power, Plymouth offered the optional 426 cu-in Hemi V8.

Due to the success of the more affordable Plymouth Road Runner, which shared the same platform but offered fewer luxury features, only 7,748 GTX models were produced in 1970 compared to 43,404 Road Runners, meaning surviving GTXs are more than five times less common. And this one — wearing Rallye Red paint and powered by a V-code Super Commando 440 with a three-speed automatic transmission — is a low-mileage example showing only 40,415 miles, believed original.

Ownership History

The Arizona seller of this 1970 Plymouth GTX has owned it since April 2024. He says, “This nicely equipped GTX has spent decades in several private collections. The drive train is all original with numbers-matching engine and transmission. The car has had one respray in the past, and the paint is in overall excellent condition.”
