Description
Introduced as part of the redesigned third-generation Galaxie lineup, the 1965 Galaxie 500 featured dramatically squared styling, vertical quad headlights, hexagonal taillights, and a wider perimeter-frame chassis with coil springs all around—improving ride comfort and structural rigidity—reflecting Ford’s “Total Performance” ethos.
Previously part of the mid-tier 500 series (introduced in 1962), the XL trim elevated the Galaxie with sportier appointments like bucket seats, floor-shifted transmissions, unique badging, chrome door trim, and deluxe carpeting—available only on two-door hardtops and convertibles. Built on a redesigned 119-inch wheelbase chassis, the XL embodied the transition from luxury cruiser to performance-oriented grand coupe with a powerful range of engines—from the standard 289ci V8 to the optional dual-four-barrel 427ci "Wedge Head" churning out 425 hp.
This Galaxie 500XL Convertible is refinished in its factory-correct red and is fitted with a replacement white soft top over white vinyl upholstery. Power is provided by a 390ci V8 and sent to the rear wheels through a three-speed automatic transmission, while equipment highlights including air conditioning, an aftermarket steering wheel, and auxiliary gauges
This Galaxie is now offered by the selling dealer with an Arizona title that notes “Mileage in excess of odometer mechanical limits”.
