“The scooter with the big-bike feel!” The 1964 Harley-Davidson Topper was a unique chapter in the iconic American motorcycle company's history. Introduced in 1960 and produced until 1965, the Topper was Harley-Davidson’s only scooter, designed to compete with the rising popularity of European scooters like the Vespa and Lambretta and the Japanese Honda Dream.
Unlike Harley’s traditional heavyweight motorcycles, the Topper featured a compact, step-through frame and a 165 cc two-stroke single-cylinder engine. The engine was air-cooled and mounted horizontally under the seat, and the scooter had a fiberglass body, which helped reduce weight.
“Automatic transmission—just twist and go!” The Topper used a continuously variable transmission (CVT), known as the "Scootaway Drive," which eliminated the need for manual shifting.
The 1964 model retained the core design but included minor refinements in styling and performance. “Styled for the modern rider, engineered for performance”, the Topper struggled in the U.S. market against the established European brands and the new Japanese competition coming on shore.
