Description
OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE
The 1964 Pontiac GTO is widely regarded as the car that ignited the muscle car era. Conceived by Pontiac engineers John DeLorean, Bill Collins, and Russ Gee, the GTO was offered as an option package for the Tempest Le Mans. It featured a potent 389 cubic inch V8 engine producing up to 348 horsepower with the optional tri-power carburetor setup, paired with a heavy-duty suspension and sporty styling.
Pontiac cleverly marketed the GTO as a performance car for the youth market, bypassing GM’s internal ban on engines over 330 cubic inches in intermediate cars by offering it as an option rather than a standalone model. The car’s name, borrowed from Ferrari’s Gran Turismo Omologato, added a touch of European flair.
Sales expectations were modest—Pontiac hoped to sell 5,000 units—but demand exploded, with over 32,000 GTOs sold in its debut year. Available in coupe, hardtop, and convertible body styles, the 1964 GTO combined raw power with street style, making it a cultural icon. Car and Driver (March 1964) reported, “The new GTO does what so many others only talk about — it really does combine brute, blasting performance with balance and stability of a superior nature.”
