Description
“The fashionable New Yorker Convertible… this art beauty is unmatchable.” The 1956 Chrysler New Yorker Convertible was a highpoint in postwar American automotive design, embodying the optimism and technological ambition of the era. As part of Chrysler’s premium New Yorker line, the convertible featured the brand’s bold “Forward Look” styling, crafted by famed designer Virgil Exner. This design language emphasized sleek lines, dramatic tailfins, and a low-slung profile, reflecting the influence of jet-age aesthetics and the growing fascination with space and speed.
The New Yorker was powered by Chrysler’s formidable 354 cubic inch FirePower HEMI V8 engine, delivering 280 horsepower — making it one of the most powerful luxury convertibles of its time. It featured advanced engineering touches like push-button PowerFlite automatic transmission and torsion-bar front suspension, offering a smooth and responsive driving experience.
The 1956 New Yorker Convertible was more than just a car — it was a symbol of postwar prosperity and technological optimism. With only 921 units produced, it remains a rare and highly collectible example of Chrysler’s commitment to innovation and elegance. Its combination of bold styling, powerful performance, and luxurious appointments made it a standout in an era defined by rapid automotive advancement and a growing American car culture.

Ownership History
The consignor states, “One of 921 Chrysler New Yorker Convertibles manufactured in 1956; this particular vehicle is rare because it was manufactured in Chrysler's LA plant. When purchased it was a high #3, but the color combination was so stunning we were invited to many Concours events where it showed very well.” “Because of the attention it attracted, in 2015 we completed a full restoration, returning the car to its original beauty and highlighting its three-tone blue leather interior. It was displayed for three years at the Northeast Classic Car Museum in Norwich, NY, and also received the Bomgardner Award for Outstanding Restoration for a post 1942 automobile.”
