Description

The 1955 Buick Special was Buick’s entry-level model, yet it embodied the optimism and daring styling of mid-century America. Part of the Series 40 lineup, the Special benefited from Buick’s 1954 redesign, receiving updates like a wraparound windshield, a textured oval grille, and chrome “Dagmars” on the front bumper. Signature Buick details such as the sweeping “Sweepspear” side trim and triple VentiPorts on the fenders reinforced its upscale image.

Under the hood, the Special featured Buick’s new “Nailhead” V8 engine. The standard 264-cubic-inch version produced 188 horsepower. Transmission choices included a three-speed manual or the smooth Dynaflow automatic, which was a popular upgrade, as seen here. Riding on a 122-inch wheelbase, the Special offered body styles ranging from sedans and hardtops to convertibles and station wagons, including the popular Series 48 Two-Door Tourback Sedan.

Priced between $2,230 and $2,975, the Special delivered luxury touches at an accessible cost in a way that resonated with America’s growing middle class, helping Buick rank fifth among U.S. automakers in 1955.

This Special Two-Door Tourback Sedan finished in Carlsbad Black and reportedly received a comprehensive interior overhaul along with new brakes, brake cylinders, and brake lines just prior to this auction. It is now offered in Michigan on behalf of the current owner.
