Description
OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE
The Studebaker Commander nameplate was introduced in 1927 and became one of the company's most important and enduring models. By 1940, the Commander occupied the middle tier of Studebaker's passenger-car lineup, offering greater size and power than the Champion while remaining more affordable than the prestigious President.
The '40 Commander featured an all-steel body, integrated front fenders, a distinctive vertical grille, and styling that blended traditional prewar design cues with the smoother body contours that were becoming common throughout the American automobile industry.
Today, Commanders are appreciated for their Art Deco-era styling and sturdy body-on-frame construction, which readily accepts modern V8 powertrains. This Sedan is an older custom build with numerous modifications, most notably a 350ci LT1 V8 engine, a TH350 three-speed automatic transmission, and a 1990s Chevrolet Camaro-sourced front sub-frame, suspension, and rear end with a 2.70 gear ratio.
The Commander has been refinished in black paint with white hood stripes over a red custom interior with cloth upholstery. It also features molded front and rear fenders, custom-formed running boards, shaved/removed door handles and electric door poppers, 14" chrome wheels, power front disc brakes, power steering, power windows, front bucket seats, digital instrumentation, a Sunpro temperature gauge, power-operated trunk lid, and an aftermarket AM/FM/cassette stereo with power antenna.
The car was acquired by the current Ohio owner in 2021.
This 1940 Studebaker Commander Sedan Custom is now offered at no reserve in Michigan by the seller on behalf of the current owner with a clean Ohio title in the current owner's name.
