Description
“Setting Chrysler Performance Still Farther Ahead.” The 1928 Chrysler Series 72 represented the brand’s growing reputation for blending engineering sophistication with accessible pricing in the late 1920s. Introduced as a mid‑range offering above the Series 62, the 72 embodied Walter P. Chrysler’s strategy of delivering advanced mechanical features that rivaled more expensive competitors. Its most notable element was the 85-hp, 249ci L‑head six‑cylinder engine, and Series 72 Roadsters benefitted from the hot 6:1 compression ratio cylinder head branded as the “Red Head.”
The Series 72 came in a wide variety of body styles from roadsters to sedans, many crafted by outside coachbuilders. The car’s chassis engineering, including hydraulic brakes on all four wheels, helped cement the company’s image as an innovator.
The model earned international credibility when in 1928, four Chrysler Series 72 entries were fielded in the grueling 24 Hours of Le Mans via the French distributor, Grand Garage Saint‑Didier of Paris. The lightly stripped but otherwise stock Roadsters performed impressively: One finished 3rd overall, another finished 4th, giving Chrysler its first—and only—overall podium at Le Mans. A Series 72 also scored a class win at the 1928 Mille Miglia.
Showing 61,300 miles, this 1928 Chrysler Series 72 Roadster is now offered by the selling dealer with 15 repair orders since the early 2000s, glass side curtains, vintage literature, and Connecticut registration.
