The Porsche 804 was the company’s first and only factory-built Formula 1 car, developed for the 1962 World Championship under the new 1.5‑liter engine regulations. It represented the peak—and the end—of Porsche’s brief Grand Prix effort.
The 804 featured an advanced air‑cooled, flat‑eight engine producing around 180 horsepower, mounted in a lightweight tubular spaceframe chassis. Extensive use of aluminum and magnesium helped keep weight low, while the car employed disc brakes and precise engineering typical of Porsche’s racing philosophy.
Despite limited resources, the Porsche 804 achieved a landmark success when Dan Gurney won the 1962 French Grand Prix at Rouen-Les-Essarts, giving Porsche its only Formula 1 World Championship victory. Gurney also won the non‑championship Solitude Grand Prix, underlining the car’s potential on fast, flowing circuits. Ultimately, the 804 was outpaced by lighter, more powerful British cars using monocoque chassis construction. At the end of 1962, Porsche withdrew from Formula 1 to focus on sports car racing and hill climbs.
Porsche constructed four examples of the 804 Formula 1 car, and all four are now on display at prominent sites such as the Porsche Museum in Germany and the Donington Grand Prix Collection in England.
Built in-house by the Wilson Collection in Jupiter, Florida, this 1962 Porsche 804 F1 replica wears a hand-formed aluminum body finished in period-correct gloss silver with Dan Gurney’s historic #30 on each side, wrapped over a tube frame much like the original. Its five-lug alloy wheels with bias ply tires are paired with modernized suspension using Porsche 911 torsion bars, Penske Racing shocks, and four-wheel disc brakes. The stark cockpit houses minimal instrumentation, a removable steering wheel, and a single red leather seat beneath a fixed roll cage. Because the original flat-eight is extremely rare and complex, The 901 Shop in Stuart, Florida, built a 2.0L Porsche flat-six paired with a Hewland five-speed manual transaxle to deliver an authentic vintage Formula 1 driving experience, one enjoyed by the great Brian Redman at a vintage-focused event.
Martin Steger, who in 1966 prepared the 804 in the Porsche Museum, called this “a beautiful replica… they basically duplicated the car that once was very competitive.”
This 1962 Porsche 804 Formula 1 Replica is now offered by the selling dealer in North Carolina on Bill of Sale only.
