History of the 1982-1992 Chevrolet Camaro
Shorter and lighter, the all-new 1982 Camaro had a fastback appearance, achieved through the use of a large, compound-curved rear window. Engines ranged from a 151-cid four to a 305-cid Crossfire injection V-8. A Camaro Z28 paced the 1982 Indy 500.
Although more than 100,000 Z28s were sold in 1984, the Camaro IROC-Z package, introduced in 1985, would temporarily supplant the popular designation during 1988-90. The instantly collectible "1LE" SCCA racing package was first offered during 1988. An RS package was offered regionally for two years before the designation went onto all base Camaros in 1989.
Chevrolet officially revived the Camaro convertible in 1987, using the new drop-top to commemorate the car line’s 20th anniversary. That same year, a comfort-focused LT option replaced the Berlinetta, which had featured high-tech electronics from 1984 to 86.
The final Gen III Camaros of 1992 were all 25th anniversary models. An optional Heritage package provided suitably retro accents.
Numerous factory special packages and after-market upgrades were offered from 1982 to 1992. Equipment availability also varied regionally. Wise collectors study every Camaro nuance carefully before buying.
