History of the 1970-1981 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28
The official badge morphed into “Z28” during the ’70s, a decade that Chevrolet kicked off with a beautiful new Camaro body and a new engine for its rip-snortin’ pony car. Standard behind the 1970½ Z28s pointed prow was the Corvette’s 350-cid LT-1 V-8, rated at 360 horsepower. Between fiberglass flanks in 1970, this screaming small-block was advertised at 370 horses. Output dropped steadily from there, and in 1973 civilized hydraulic lifters replaced the solid tappets heard beneath the hoods of all previous Z’s. A further decline led to the car’s temporary cancellation after 1974, but it returned triumphantly in 1977 as an individual model instead of an options package.
Another Camaro facelift, along with new aluminum wheels, greeted Z28 customers in 1978, a front air dam and fender louvers were added in 1979, and a functional rear-facing hood scoop appeared in 1980. By 1981, output for the Z28s standard 350 small-block had dropped to a net-rated 165 horsepower.
