History of the 1969 Pontiac Trans Am

Discounting Chevrolet's niche-market Corvette, Pontiac's fabled Trans Am Firebird was Detroit's only high-performance machine to roll uninterrupted from the original muscle car era into the new millennium. The $1,100 Trans Am Performance and Appearance Package, option code WS4, debuted in 1969 to wow critics with both its exciting image and intimidating nature. All 697 Trans Ams built that first year featured twin hood scoops, fender-mounted air extractors, a rear airfoil and glowing Cameo White paint accented with blue racing stripes. Standard power was supplied by a 335-hp 400-cid Ram Air III V-8. Pontiac's truly hot 345-hp Ram Air IV 400 was optional, as was a choice between a Muncie four-speed or General Motors' superb Turbo Hydra-Matic automatic. A predictably beefed suspension and power front discs also were included in the deal. Especially coveted today are the eight '69 Trans Am convertibles, all of which were fitted with the Ram Air III 400. Only 55 Ram Air IV coupes were released that year.
