Michael (Mike) Heaton served as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at Markel Group Inc. from February 2024 to February 2026 and as Executive Vice President from May 2022 to February 2026, where he oversaw the day-to-day operations for Markel Group with an intentional focus on three core priorities: pursuing the best capital allocation opportunities, attracting and supporting top company leaders, and amplifying the cultural values in the Markel Style.

Mike joined Markel in 2008 and served in several different leadership roles, including as President of Markel Ventures from January 2016 to May 2022, and President and Chief Executive Officer, Markel Ventures, Inc., a Markel subsidiary, from May 2020 to May 2022. Mike played a key role in expanding Markel’s portfolio and, in 2021, led Markel's transformation into a diversified holding entity, reshaping its vision, structure, and governance. Mike's early career spanned entrepreneurial and operational roles, and he has served on corporate boards such as CapTech, Brahmin, Lansing Building Products, and Costa Farms.

Mike holds a B.A. in Economics from Brigham Young University and an MBA from the Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia.
