Our Cars: Rudy Bishop’s 1958 Chevy Biscayne

1958 is a special year for Rudy Bishop, a licensed sales agent at Hagerty for the past 7 years. It was the year he and his beautiful Chevy Biscayne were both born.

Car: “1958 Chevrolet Biscayne 40 sedan. 71,000 original miles – a great driver! We’ve had it nearly 5 years.”

Background: “I was born in Lansing, and Michigan is home of the automobile. I have always liked cars, trucks and Americana. My wife’s dad owned a Mobil station in Dearborn, and then went to work for Ford. When we got married, we were married at Henry Ford’s estate and had the reception there as well.”

Why a ’58 Chevy? “My wife and I lived in Colorado from 1982 to 1990. There was a similar ’58 Biscayne with a lucky horseshoe in the grille that we passed every day in the neighborhood. It became my “car of choice,” and years later, when we saw this one, we bought it. I was also born in ’58, which makes this car even more special.”

Repairs and Modifications (planned or completed): “We’ve done some minor engine and mechanical work, and had the front seat repaired and reupholstered. We would like to add a stereo.”

Hobby activities (clubs, events etc.): “I’m a regular at Hagerty’s car show in July and the A&W in Frankfort, Mich. But I’m always up for a good cruise.”

Favorite Drive: “Around Crystal Lake in northern Michigan.”

Best and Worst Moment: “My favorite moment was taking it to the Cherry Bowl Drive-In movie theater for the first time. What fun!! But bringing it home that night was a different story. We ran out of gas – even though the gauge said I had quarter-tank – while going up a big hill near Honor, Mich. I had to walk 2 miles roundtrip to get gas. It certainly wasn’t an “out of gas” ploy like the ones we used to pull on our sweethearts back in the day!”
