New Ford Ranger Black Appearance Package proves old is new again

The new Ford Ranger might have just gone on sale this January, but Ford is already making updates in the form of the Black Appearance Package, which is one of the most self-explanatory options available on a new car order sheet.

If the Ranger’s Chrome or Sport appearance packages aren’t quite dark or aggressive enough for you, the black package is just your ticket. The black paint extends from bumper to bumper and even underneath the truck if the buyer selects the FX4 Off Road Package.

In total, the Black Appearance Package darkens the tone on 10 different parts of the truck, including. Do you want the full list? Here it is: Black-painted grille, body-color bumpers, High-gloss black-painted 18-inch aluminum wheels with black center caps, black running boards black spray-in bed liner, black fender vent surround, black side mirror caps, black sill plate, black bash plate on FX4 Off Road Package, black lower valance

While the blacked out look makes the new Ranger look pretty sharp, it is also a bit comical to watch the current crop of automotive designers follow a trend that ol’ Henry Ford himself set almost a century ago. Remember, the Model T started life in 1908 with a small selection of color options. Yet by the end of the production run in 1927, all Model Ts became black. With any luck modern designers will keep this trend from going too far. If the color palette is going to continue to get more boring though, at least the Ranger makes boring look not-so-boring. Maybe a nice green hue could work its way in?
