Here’s your chance to meet master custom builder Randy Grubb

Randy and Jeanette Grubb are hitting the road in Randy’s newest creation, a 1959 VW Bus, and one of their first stops will be a book signing at Autobooks-Aerobooks in Burbank, California.

You’ve probably heard of Randy—or at least seen some of his gargantuan rolling sculptures over the 20 years that he’s been crafting cars. He’s known for building huge V-12-powered roadsters, as well as his use of bare aluminum bodywork.

Randy’s latest creation is a direct descendent of his Magic Bus build, which used a GMC Motorhome chassis, the front of a Divco delivery truck, and the most of a VW Bus body perched on top. While the Magic Bus build pulled design elements from the two later vehicles, most of the body was made from aluminum that Grubb hand-formed in his shop in Grants Pass, Oregon. After adding a row of windows to an 11-window bus to mimic the rare Samba, the rear of the bus was built from lapped and riveted aluminum, a technique that Randy used when building his Decoliner RV.

With the Love Bus on to its home in San Francisco, Randy decided that the VW Bus that served as its cupola would look pretty good on its own, so he duplicated the process beginning with a 1959 11-window. He added the VW-signature cloth top and, of course, the row of curved windows, but he also added a 2.5-liter Subaru powertrain for a much-needed boost in power.

If you’d like to see Randy and his new bus, and pick up a signed second-edition copy of From Mind to Metal, the book featuring all of Randy’s builds up to the Magic Bus, you can catch him at Autobooks-Aerobooks in Burbank, California, on Saturday, November 16, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
