Dodge hints at Charger Widebody with fat-fendered concept

Dodge showed off its Charger Widebody concept last weekend during that Spring Fest 14 gathering of the Mopar faithful. Safe to say the car was a hit, and although folks expect Dodge to build it, design chief Mark Trostle called the beefy Charger a “concept” in an Instagram post.

The speculation started as soon as people saw a Dodge Charger Hellcat, not at all discreetly camouflaged, with wide flares and a more aggressive stance cruising Detroit last week. Given that Dodge already offered widebody editions of the Challenger, which shares the Charger’s platform, everyone assumed a similarly outfitted Charger is a sure thing.

The generously-hipped Charger is based on the Hellcat Charger and it’s 707-horsepower supercharged engine, which is what we’d want to see under the hood. But, as with the Widebody Challenger, Dodge could offer it with the naturally aspirated, 485-horsepower 392-cubic-inch Hemi, or even the totally crazy 797-hp Hellcat Redeye.

Beyond the wide fenders, front splitter and rear spoiler, we’d expect a Charger Widebody to get the same mechanical upgrades as its smaller sibling. That car got wider 305-mm Pirelli P-Zero tires, stiffer front springs, larger anti-roll bars at both ends, SRT-tuned adaptive shock absorbers, and six-piston Brembo brake calipers. All of which leaves us with one thing to say:

Build it. Now.
