BMW Deems America Worthy of the 2025 M5 Touring

After teasing the upcoming new M5 Touring, and lots of rumors that it would be headed our way, BMW has finally admitted that the long-roof performance car will be sold in the United States. This marks the first time that BMW’s mid-size performance wagon will be available in the U.S., as neither the E34 nor the E61 versions were offered on our shores.

The E61 packed a rowdy V-10 powerplant and set a high bar for performance wagons, but the 2025 model should uphold the reputation. We expect the powerplant to be a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 paired with an electric motor that brings total output into the 700 hp range. Dirk Häcker, Head of Development at BMW M, has confirmed the electrification, “We are now also installing a hybrid drive system with typical M performance in other high-performance cars.”

Camouflaged test vehicles are currently scattered across Germany and the United States, and it will soon be hitting the Nürburgring’s Nordschleife to further hone the suspension’s track prowess. We’re hoping the M5 Touring’s combination will hit the sweet spot of engaging yet liveable to make it a dream daily driver.

We’re not sure what finally prodded BMW to offer the M5 in the U.S., although BMW said that “enthusiasts across the country have made their voices heard.” Perhaps the positive response to Audi’s RS6 Avant spurred things along. Pssst. . . Cadillac. . . Are you seeing this?

BMW noted that production of the 2025 M5 Touring will begin at the end of the 2024, so you’ve got time to make room in your garage and also rationalize your purchase. Just remember, it’s got room for the family and groceries—that means it’s practical.

    Calling that an M5 is a sacrilige……looks like every other SUV out there….BMW has soo lost there way it is sad.

    What will this sticker for, $120k? How much will the dealers ask above that. Good luck getting one. Given all the tech, will this weigh any bit less than an X5M?

    I don’t know why, but I really like station wagons… I just couldn’t squeeze the trigger on a current generation monster bucktooth BMW. Nearest Audi dealer is How far away?

    I sold my 66 GT350 when Ford pushed forward the abomination of Mustang Mach E, (Should have been called the Thunderbird). Lost and disconnected they are!
    Now for Bavaria; the folks at BMW are there, lost of heritage and brand DNA. Man & Women! That new Grill? Do I sell my 2002 Turbo? Love that car, but times are a chang’n. I’ll spend more time on my visceral bicycle. The car makers are currently managed by Excel sheets with little passion for the driving experience and design. Also making it dangerous to drive as more people pretend to drive while using their idiot screens / phones rather then use a blinker or basic skills. On my bicycle it will be over quickly, do Old Guys Rule?

    No? What’s age have to do with anything…. Old guys are just the most vocal.

    Why deprive yourself of something that brings your joy because a totally different company did something you don’t like? It was not today’s Ford or BMW that built the vintage rides you like. You owning those or not doesn’t matter to Ford or BMW one iota. Live your life and have fun. Getting wrapped up in things the way you are seems like being frustrated over what is essentially nothing.

    I see so many people expressing their disappointment with a styling change, when most aren’t even possible buyers.
    Car manufacturers are there to sell cars, whatever the vehicle needs to be.
    Some carve out a space in a niche segment, but their priority is to sell cars, not keep dreamers of the good old days happy without change.

    I can buy any car I want, I don’t buy what I don’t like.
    Most car companies are making potatoes today, can’t tell them apart. And for sure they are there to sell and make barrels of money – they just DO NOT need to look all alike. I know this well as a former European Mark Brand & Sales Manager. Drivers wanted! Make great products – the people will retaliate with support. Are you a fan of self driving vehicles? That’s not driving.
    Maybe the dreamers are the ones on the front lines leading; not following the sheep.

    I wanted a wagon in 2022 and narrowed it down to a Cadillac CTS-V and Volvo V90. The V died in 2014 and the V90 departed in 2021. Only 3 were available in 2022, 2 white and 1 blue, so I bought the blue and drove it home from Colorado.
    Wonderful car, plenty of guts, and 1 of only 168 imported by Volvo in 2022. Now Volvo, like Buick has gone full SUV route.
    Wagpns, Estates, Shooting Brakes only appeal to a few of us…but shouldn’t we all be offered a choice that doesn’t cost $125k to $185k?
    Maybe Cadillac will make another CTS or V.

    My wife’s W211 E350 wagon is the best car she’s ever had. It continues to draw “loving” comments from all kinds of folks. I love the design and with 168K on the clock, it has been remarkably inexpensive to operate (follow the recommended maintenance). Aside from the new Audi A6 wagon and the Volvo, I’m not too thrilled with current long roof offerings. I’ve personally never owned anything but BMW (going back to 1964). The new BMW’s are amazing cars, but far to expensive and built with planned obsolesce, like all other electronic devises!
