Auction Recap: Gooding & Company’s 2015 Scottsdale Sale

Gooding & Company’s 2015 Scottsdale auction, held Jan. 16-17, improved on last year’s outing with $51.5 million in sales, including buyer’s premium, from the sale of 114 of 126 lots. This dollar amount was 4% above 2014, with slightly fewer lots sold and a slightly lower sell-through rate.

High sale for the two-day auction was a beautiful 1959 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spyder. The car, originally built with open headlights which later became covered, was a long-time institution in Jack Castor’s distinguished collection, and sold for $7.7 million.

Despite some surprising missed sales, strong results weren’t difficult to locate. For example, a 1964 Pontiac LeMans GTO convertible sold for $330,000, and a 1979 Volkswagen Beetle convertible rallied to a $66,000 final price. Most surprisingly, however, was a 1960 Fiat 600 Jolly that defied all odds to land at $170,500 – more than a Series I E-type convertible1973 Porsche 911S and 1991 Ferrari Testarossa (among a laundry list of others) that sold for at the same sale.
