New Lotus video teases Evija EV hypercar

In advance of its planned reveal later this month, Lotus continues to tease its upcoming Type 130 hypercar, dropping another video and revealing at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed that the all-electric high performance sports car will be called the Evija. Pronounced “ev-eye-a,” the word, apparently of Hebrew origin by way of Latvian, means both “the first in existence” and “the living one,” related to the biblical name Eve.

The Evija will be the first all-new model launch for Lotus since Chinese entrepreneur Li Shufu’s Geely acquired the British specialty firm.

In a statement, Lotus Cars CEO Phil Popham said, “Evija is the perfect name for our new car because it’s the first hypercar from Lotus, our first electric offering and is the first new model under the stewardship of Geely.

“The Evija is a Lotus like no other, yet a true Lotus in every sense. It will re-establish our brand on the global automotive stage and pave the way for further visionary models.”

Visitors to the Goodwood event will could enjoy both current and classic Lotus models on display, including Jim Clark’s record-setting Lotus 25, along with a “light show experience” that gives viewers a few more details of the Evija’s exterior design.

The Evija will have its formal introduction in London on July 16th. Production of the 130th Lotus model will begin next year (all Lotus racing and road cars have type designations; for example, the Elan was Type 26 and Mario Andretti won the Formula 1 championship in the Type 78), with just 130 examples of the electric sports car to be made at Lotus’ Hethel factory. Pricing is expected to be well into seven figures, perhaps as much as $2.6 million.
