My goodness, it’s Goodwood: Vintage-racing video highlights from 2020’s SpeedWeek

COVID-19 be damned, SpeedWeek at Goodwood still took place this year, and despite the lack of fans in the stands, some amazing races took place. There is a rich vein of vintage-racing videos to be mined here. These are a few of the highlights:

Whitsun Trophy

The Whitsun Trophy is the fastest race at Goodwood. In this video, you’ll see exotic sports prototypes from the 1960s go head-to-head, including Ford GT40s, McLaren M1Bs, and LolaT70s. With speeds topping 160 mph into the braking zone on the Lavant straight, the racing is glorious to behold.

Seven Best Onboards

The real highlight of this segment is the all-new Ford Mustang Mach-E 1400 piloted by Vaughn Gittin, Jr. The onboard audio lets you get up and personal to the angry murder-hornet buzz of the Mach-E’s electric motors while Gittin yanks at the car’s hydraulic handbrake like an old-timey pump handle. Indian racing driver Karun Chandhok wheels a Williams FW08 around the circuit; his video, bookended between videos of two Jaguar E-types, puts in stark relief just how far racing technology has advanced in only a couple decades.

Brutal Battles

A solid 45 minutes of pure vintage-racing joy, the video of the Gerry Marshall Trophy is the updated version of the little versus large saloon (Brit speak for “sedan”) car racing of the St. Mary’s Trophy. Cars from the 1950s through the 1980s compete in this mashup, including Ford Mustangs, Fiestas, and Capris. There are also Chevrolet Camaros, Rover SD1s, and Minis to round out the field.

These are just a few of the videos; you could easily make an entire evening out of surfing from one segment to the next. So fire up that surround-sound system, pour your favorite beverage, and get ready to enjoy some vintage-racing goodness.
