Jean Bugatti is Born: Automobile designer Jean Bugatti is born in Cologne, Germany, the eldest son of Automobiles E. Bugatti founder Ettore Bugatti.

Jan. 16, 1853

 

Birth of Michelin: The inventor of the pneumatic tire, André Michelin, is born.

Jan. 17, 1953

 

Corvette Unveiled: The Corvette is first introduced at the GM Motorama as a concept show car.

Jan. 18, 1919

 

Bentley is Founded: Bentley Motors Limited is first formed by W.O. Bentley to manufacture luxury automobiles.

Jan. 19, 1903

 

Tour de France is Announced: A new bicycle race, the “Tour de France,” is announced. The race was organized to increase paper sales for the magazine “L’Auto.”

Jan. 20, 1901

 

Texas Strikes Oil: Oil is first discovered in the state of Texas.
