The Great Race: Follow along on this nine-day classic road rally

The Great Race, sponsored in part by Hagerty, has begun. The 2012 event kicked off Saturday, June 23, in Traverse City, Mich., with appearances by Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder and Chasing Classic Cars host Wayne Carini.

During the nine-day classic road rally, nearly 100 cars will cover 2,300 miles across two countries, four states and 19 cities. The field consists of drivers and navigators from all over the country driving everything from a 1907 Renault to a 1965 Mustang. In addition to participants in the Rookie, Sportsman, Expert and Grand Champion classifications, four X-Cup, or youth teams, are also competing.

Hagerty is pitting two teams against each other in a friendly rivalry: A “boys’ team” consisting of PR Manager Jonathan Klinger and Parts Specialist Davin Reckow in a 1930 Model A Tudor, and a “girls’ team” made up of Youth Advocacy Coordinator Tabetha Salsbury and Claims Adjuster Kacy Smith in a 1962 International Travelette 3/4-ton pickup.
