Model overview

Model description

The last full year for the VW Beetle in the U.S. was 1979, but it wasn’t done yet in South America, not even close. The Beetle lasted 24 more years there, and in Mexico only ceased production in Mexico when four doors were required for taxis. VW built 1,156,455 vehicles in 1979 but only 10,681 were Super Beetle cabriolets sold in the U.S. Production actually totaled 15,253 Cabriolets but the remaining 4572 cars were sold in 1980. The price had risen to $6800 and the final “Epilog Models” were triple black and cost an extra $200. These cars are fairly collectible today.

The 1979/80 Cabriolet was available in 12 exterior colors. They were Lemon Yellow (A1D); Indiana Red (A3V); Florida Blue (A5A); Riviera Blue Metallic (K6V); Mars Red (31B); Black (41); Alpine White (90E); Pearl Metallic (94K); Brazil Brown Metallic (96F); Diamond Silver Metallic (97A); Platinum Metallic (98G) and Colibri Green Metallic (99Y).
