Market commentary
The bidding stalled at Euros 1.4 million and Rob Myers personally ground Ferraris Jean Todt to get the reserve dropped. He succeeded, and it was the highlight of the event, demonstrating just how serious both RM and Ferrari were about making this sale a success. This is a reasonable transaction for this recent, fresh Ferrari F1, but the US underbidder stopped because of VAT. It adds 20%, and he didnt understand that its refundable to non EU resident buyers who export the car. That is an important cautionary reminder for US (excuse me, North American) auction houses operating in the EU to educate their North American clients: VAT confuses bidders, and confused bidders sit on their paddles.
