Notes and observations recorded by Hagerty staff.

Equipment

RHD. Started life as a 512S driven by Andretti, Ickx, Merzario, Oliver, Schetty and Giunti with indifferent results. Converted by Ferrari to the first 512M (modificata) with firsts at Kyalami and Imola. Then completely revamped by Ferrari to 7 liter 712 Can Am with modest success for Ferrari and NART. Restored for Obrist in late 80s, little used until recent sale to American collector. First class recent mechanical preparation but cosmetics show use and age. Definitely not a showcar, and not even a particularly presentable historic race car.

Market commentary

With 680hp at 8,000rpm no one will have much time to notice the stone stars in the paint or oxidation on the aluminum. An awesome motor, the largest Ferrari V12 ever, with an exhaust note like one and a half 5 liter V8s that tintinnabulates the eardrums at a fraction of its redline. Its unique in the world and its price is its value, even if its an F40 or so less than the seller is rumored to have paid for it.
