Equipment
428/335hp Cobra Jet, automatic, special order paint, power steering, power brakes, power windows, power top, air conditioning, Polyglas GT tires, 3.00 Traction-Lok, Deluxe Marti Report, copy of the original window sticker, purchase order and title.
Condition
From the Kevin Collins collection. Very rare Cobra Jet Cougar XR7 convertibles, said to be one of only 37 with this engine. Paint is showing some age and has a few chips and minor scratches in it. Panel fit is a little uneven. Some of the brightwork looks new. Trim around the windshield has some scratches in it. Convertible top looks great and fits very well. Engine bay is very clean, but showing some signs of use and age. Underneath is very clean with only slight signs of wear. Looks to have new exhaust. Interior is excellent and showing next to no wear. Two-owner car given a basic restoration somewhat recently.
Market commentary
Sold at Mecum Houston in 2014 for $83,700 but came up short at Kissimmee in 2015 with a bid of $75,000 and earlier this year with a bid of $95,000. It's always dangerous to try to squeeze out the last thousand dollars or so, an attempt that in this case lopped $8,000 off the hammer price. However the result is more than a comparably equipped Mustang, which is not the usual outcome when comparing Mercury and Ford values. An expensive car, but it deserves to be.
