Equipment
One of only two 4 wheel drive Lotus 63s built, driven by Mario Andretti at the German GP on the Nurburgring, by John Miles at Monza, by Jochen RIndt and Miles in Canada and by Andretti again at Watkins Glen and Miles in Mexico, all without success. DFV V8 powered and restored as built, this also is unfortunately the car in which its late owner John Dawson Damer became late at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2000. Freshly rebuilt and historically significant if not successful.
Market commentary
This result is a triumph of technical innovation over racing success, a typically imaginative Colin Chapman Maurice Phillippe exercise in thinking outside the box although without the competition success which Chapman Phillippe would enjoy on other projects. The Lotus 63 led to other, better, things, however and that makes its transaction here a reasonable balance between promise and accomplishment. There are only two, the other is in the Donington Museum, but this one can get out there and run (carefully) with the big dogs.
