Equipment
Make no mistake, this is not a real car but rather the prototype created earl in AVS Shadows attempt to create really innovative breakthrough in Can Am design. It is incomplete and appears never to have been complete. It did, however, spawn the first Shadow Can Ams which were built along the same lines, a radically low, streamlined, wingless platform so low the drivers feet had to be turned sideways, the pedals operated sideways, the steering wheel was nearly horizontal and the clutch was hand operated. With 12 rear wheels mounting 16 wide tires and 10 fronts with 11 wide tires. It was all about minimal frontal area. Bought directly from Don Nichols by Peter Kaus in 1990, it will require great work and ingenuity to re create the concept in Nichols and Trevor Harriss minds 38 years ago, but the embodiment of the concept is here, ready for realization. Market commentary
The bidding opened at $30k and didnt stop til it was sold. As an example of the unbridled ingenuity and creativity loosed by the rule less Can Am (and the purses, which were by the standards of the day huge) this Lowline Shadow is unequalled. As racing series concentrate on creating contrived shows with rules bound spec racing rigidity, the value of this Shadow can only increase. We can only hope the buyer will hire the help and spend the money to finish what AVS started.
