Equipment
396/375hp, 4-speed, Mag-style wheels with gold line tires, 12-bolt rear, factory AM/FM radio, dash-mounted clock.
Condition
Genuine Z16 represented as one of only three in this color combination. Sold new in IL. Older body-off restoration with minor paint blistering on the hood and a crack above the trunk lid. Otherwise, the exterior looks great, while the interior shows light general wear to the seats and general dullness to the metal trim on the dash. A cool, collectible, and only lightly aged early big-block.
Market commentary
Marking the first time a big-block made its way into a showroom Chevelle, the Z16 debuted hot on the heels of Pontiac’s GTO in mid-1965. Potent but expensive and not actively promoted, it only sold 200 copies. This one sold for $89,100 at Mecum Kissimmee two years ago and then for $165,000 in Scottsdale the year after. Given those very recent results and the age of its restoration, the price it brought here in Indy is surprisingly high. A Z16 Chevelle is a highlight of any GM muscle car collection and you can’t always be picky when shopping for one, but this really is an expensive result.
