Equipment
289ci V 8, 4 speed, black sidepipes, Halibrand wheels, Goodyear race tires, forward braced roll hoop, quick lift jacking points, drivers side acrylic windscreen, hood scoop, front brake scoops, Le Mans quick fill fuel cap. Originally a street spec Cobra, returned to Shelby American in 1964 for conversion to race spec and then raced in SCCA races by Chuck Parsons and then Monte Shelton. Completely restored to 1964 state in 1991. Shows little sign of use with paint, interior and mechanicals as new. Tires show some age in the form of dirt and light drying out. Excellent car, excellent provenance.
Market commentary
Many Cobras raced in period but far fewer were prepared as race cars by Shelby American. This car, with its factory race preparation, comprehensive documentation and significant race history garnered considerable attention throughout the weekend and easily reached its low estimate. In 2002, fresh from restoration, it sold here at RM Monterey for $264,000, giving todays value an annual rate of return of about 17.5% compounded.
