Equipment
2 liter Tipo 60 as raced until 1964. Completely original from that day, with all the bumps, nicks and fettling. The first production Birdcage, originally delivered to Ovidio Govoni and raced with success and consistency to a remarkable string of 1sts and 2nds, winning the Italian Championship twice and finishing 2nd once. Carefully stored by the seller since 1966, occasionally exercised. Runs and drives.
Market commentary
This Maserati is going to be the star of the show wherever it appears. This price is 50% more than RM got for the freshly restored ex Cunningham Birdcage S N 2462 (with later 3 liter engine) at Amelia in 98 and sets a new, and appropriate, benchmark for Birdcage prices based on its exquisite originality, superb condition and successful Italian racing history. There will never be another one like this. Five bidders were still in the ring at a million pounds on the way to a world record Maserati price at auction. Thierry Morin, NYC Concours 10 2 2005
