Notes and observations recorded by Hagerty staff.

Equipment

One of two 5000 GTs built with the gear camshaft drive V8 like the 450S from which the engine was derived (the other is the Shah car) for South African businessman Basil Read. Beautifully restored in its original colors, 1999 PB Class winner when the class was its 5000 GT siblings making this arguably the best 5000 GT in the world. The ultimate Maserati GT.

Market commentary

This is Big Money for a Maserati road car (although the 450S origins of the 5000 GTs engine tests the limits of road car) putting it in the same league as its competitors from Maranello. This is an important transaction for Maserati values, which have been climbing recently anyway. The 450S Costin Coupe is nearly restored for this cars seller and who wouldnt consider that a trade up, even from the best Maserati GT in the world
