Notes and observations recorded by Hagerty staff.

Equipment

Chrome spoke Borranis, Marchal lights, fog lights in grille. The last Cal Spyder built with an inboard plug engine. Known history from new. Restored for David Smith to 1998 Pebble Beach class winning condition which it still displays, nine years later. Excellent paint, chrome, glass and interior. Even panel gaps, flush fits and tight joints. Chassis better than new without being overdone.

Market commentary

A spectacularly but still sensitively and sympathetically restored California Spyder that brought a noteworthy price even in this weeks superheated Cal Spyder market. Cal Spyders were under $2 million (well under) two years ago and its hard to see what might have changed in the perception of the market to make them worth this much. They are drop top TdFs, not GTOs.
