Equipment
Originally 1500, now 1600cc, Zenith carbs, Abarth exhaust. Fair old repaint, interior shows wear and age. An honest driver Speedster with an engine number that means nothing in the Kardex. The seller claims the 36,057 miles on the odometer are under 40,000 original miles.
Market commentary
Lots of bidders on the block, phone and internet. Sold to an internet bidder. Speedsters were, by Max Hoffmans original plan, built to a price, stripped teasers to get buyers into Porsche showrooms. That they worked is historical fact, but as recent sale prices including this one show, the appeal of the Speedsters light weight and elemental, responsive performance has snowballed into a movement. The oddball engine number suggests that somewhere along the way it (the engine or the Speedster or both) got brought into the California DMV for a salvage title. No explanation for the number was offered in Palm Beach and apparently the bidders didnt find it necessary to inquire. This is BIG MONEY.
