Equipment
RHD. Outside laced silver painted Borrani RW 2977 wheels on front, RW 3102 on rear. Hard cover over passengers seat, single Plexi windscreen, 58 DCOE Webers, no drivers head fairing. Excellent paint, good interior. Interesting, sympathetic restoration preserving much of the original detail, weld spatter and crude repairs. DNF at Sebring in 1955 with Ernie McAfee and Harold Wheeler for first owner William Doheny. Later raced by McAfee on the West Coast. Sold to Temple Buell in 1956 and raced by Masten Gregory, Dabney Collins, Lou Brero and Jack Bates. Corvette powered by Harry Washburn in 1959 and eventually retired until discovered by Bruce Lavachek in 1979 who also found the original engine with Dick Merritt. Restoration eventually completed in 2003. Wheels look original, just rebuilt and repainted. A very nice job of preservation. Ferrari Classiche certified.
Market commentary
Sold by RM in Monterey in 2007 for $1,540,000 (GBP 773,000 at the time) and kept in nearly like new condition since. The $2.5 million (GBP 1,550,000) low estimate is generous; the reported high bid of GBP 1.3 million is reasonable but the consignors decision to look for more also is understandable in todays hot market for correct, accurately restored, complete Mille Miglia eligible competition Ferraris.
