Equipment
RHD. Drivers head fairing and single windshield with hard cover over passengers seat, Marchal headlights and driving lights in grille. The last of five six cylinder 121LMs built, driven by Maglioli in the Giro de Sicilia, then by Castellotti in the Mille Miglia (and the subject of Denis Jenkinsons marvelous vignette describing Castellotti passing the 300SLR), by Phil Hill and Maglioli at Le Mans, by Hill in Caracas, Carroll Shelby at Elkhart Lake and Honest John Kilborn at Nassau. Later owned by Pierre Bardinon and since 1986 by the late Antoine Midy. Restored in France in 1994 by Pozzi. Some question about the engines origin. Handsomely restored, presented and maintained in slightly better than new condition, with a little evidence of use and the restorations age.
Market commentary
This is a choice piece of Ferrari competition history even though its inline six engine is a departure from the V 12 tradition. Jenks observations (I ... watched Castellotti sorting out his Ferrari, the front wheels on full understeer, with the inside one off the ground, and rubber pouring off the rear tyres, leaving great wide marks on the road. This was indeed motor racing from the best possible position ... following the Ferrari at a discreet distance.) contribute significantly and uniquely to its historic value. This post block transaction represents a reasonable compromise and accommodation by all parties, including the auction house.
