Equipment
Chrome spoke outside-laced Borrani wire wheels, Clayton heater.
Condition
Originally built as a 250 Europa and upgraded by the factory (according to a prior owner) with a 4-liter engine after being delivered. At some point prior to 1970 the front end was modified to the present covered headlight configuration. Later swapped its 375 engine for the present 330 that was in a 375 MM Spyder and restored with the present big hood scoop. Good repaint and interior. Clean but superficially done under the hood and chassis. Many strange and unsettling things in its preparation, not surprising in view of its history.
Market commentary
Man, does this Ferrari have stories to tell. It was offered at Barrett-Jackson in 1993 where it was wretched and rejected by the bidders at a reported bid of $255,000, then sold by RM in Arizona in 2005 for $198,000 in historic race car trim. I observed then that the old nose job looked like a dog sniffing for truffles and it is a testament to the quality of the subsequent paint and bodywork (as well as the attractive neutral paint color) that it now looks pretty good. Its still a hard sell, however, and the seller could have let it go at the reported bid with only momentary regrets.
