Equipment
Chrome wire wheels, dual sidemounts with chrome and painted covers, Pilot Ray lights, wind wings, rear mounted trunk. First owned by Broadway producer Billy Rose, then owned by boxer Max Baer. Restored by Rick Carroll in the 70s. Deep chrome with light polish marks. Mirror like paint with nicely varnished runningboards. The paint is starting to show its age with a small bubble on the fender and a few around the edges of the sweeps. The drivers seat has moderate wear and light soiling. The chassis also shows some light wear and could be paint detailed.
Market commentary
The gorgeous restoration is starting to show some natural aging as well as the signs of use. Sold by Sothebys at the Rick Carroll auction in 1990 for $1,045,000, then reported sold at Auburn Fall in 2001 for $879,800. Although it has known history and is an ACD Category 1 car, its is no longer fresh and this is one of the more common open body styles. The price here is appropriate for the coachwork, history and condition and shows the continuing appeal of the finest coachwork on the Model J chassis.
