Notes and observations recorded by Hagerty staff.

Equipment

Begin at the 1922 French GP where this chassis is believed to have been driven by Mones Maury, the Marquis de Casa Maury, placing 5th. Then sold to Count Zborowski who raced it at Indianapolis in 1923, George Duller, Wolf Barnato, Raymond Fontes and others. Acquired by Hamish Moffatt in about 1965 who acquired the current engine, from Bunny Phillips, from 4006. Uwe Hucke completed restoration to Indy configuration. An important and historic Bugatti with rare history in both Europe and the U.S. in sound, clean but not over restored condition. Some deviations from originality (single plug ignition, 16 valve gearbox.)

Market commentary

Sold by Christies at Pebble Beach in 2001 for $424,000. Considering the runup in the Euro, the result here is decidedly modest. Not staying in Europe, Rupert Banner said.
