Corvair - A Big Winner

In 1961 I was racing the family sedan, a 1960 Chevy 348, on weekends, which left my wife car-less. I purchased her a new 1961 Corvair Monza Coupe. We both loved that car. Corvairs were already the focus of the drag racing team I was a part of, so I already knew the Corvair was a winner at the drag strip before I ordered a 1962 Corvair 500. The only option was a 4-speed transmission and a non-standard rear-axle ratio. It would serve as my daily driver during the week and winters. "Ain't No Big Thing" was lettered the front fenders. The car went on in 1962 to set NHRA National Records in L Stock class and was class runner-up at the U.S. Nationals, a badly worn clutch failure on the final run against a much slower competitor cheated the car of the obvious glory of winning the Nationals. That was the only defeat for the Corvair in a year and a half of weekly drag racing. The Corvair was indeed "A Big Winner"...
