When I was a senior in high school in South Louisiana my grandpa bought a new 1964 Fairlane 500. I thought it was so cool that Grandpa bought a car with a small block V-8 and a stick shift...3 on the tree! It ran great and he occasionally let me use it. On one occasion I had a date with my best girl and we went to the beach after dinner to park and "talk" in the Fairlane -- and we could listen to the radio without running the battery down! Anyway, when we got ready to leave, the tries had sunk in the sand and we were stuck.....her dad would NOT be happy if we showed up late returning to her house, so I spun the tires and rocked back and forth "crunching" into reverse from first gear until we began to move! My date asked as we began to move out onto the road what that odd odor was -- to which I replied, "It's the clutch burning!". Well, the clutch cooled while driving home and no one was the wiser. My WIFE and I still remember that evening as we cruise around in the SAME Fairlane almost 50 years later!
