I brought my 2 boys, 8& 6, out to Redondo Beach, CA for a vacation for 2 weeks. The first week we decide to go camping in northern California. We had purchased a postal mail delivery truck thinking that it would be a lot of fun. Mistake! we had problems and the truck was slow, maybe 50MPH and hot. The boys had to sit on the floor as there was no seats for everyone. We lost a tire and wheel. No fun at all driving. We did have fun once we arrived at a camp site near Tahoe. We came back home after about a week and still wanted to go camping but not in the postal truck.
we decided to go camping in my 1964 Porsche Cabriolet but was unsure how we were going to pack all the things we needed. After much configurations, here is what we wound with.
4 - sleeping bags
1 - tent
1 - Stove and fuel
1 - lantern
Various pots, pans and utensils for cooking
Needless to say it was tight. The boys sat in the jumper seats. This time we headed south to San Diego. Well the trip to SD was 180 degrees different. We were able to travel at 65MPH. The boys had seats. We had the top down. The trip was transformed to fun and enjoyable. We went camping at a lake in SD for a few days and then we ventured into Mexico. We camped at a beach and experienced twilight, as there were no lights.
We then went back to SD for a day or 2.
Traveling in the Porsche was so much fun. My boys could not stop talking about the trip. it was the highlight of their vacation. Unfortunately I could not find any pictures as this took place in 1972.
