Chad M 1984 Pontiac Fiero Indy Pace Car 2dr Coupe

My dream car dropped in my lap

I couldn't believe my eyes....on the craigslist add in front of me was my childhood dream car from 23 years ago for nearly nothing. When I was 12 years old the Pontiac Fiero debuted. I was instantly in love and took every chance I could to be near one - from sitting in one at a new car show to pouring over every detail of one from a factory brochure. One day while at the mall with my mom I found a hard-backed poster of the ultimate Fiero of the time...the 1984 Indy Pace car edition. I bought the poster instantly, got an old frame from my mom when I got home, and proudly hung it over my bed. The framed print hung there until sometime while I was in college.

Fast forward 23 years later, I was still a bona fide car lover who had become a regular at finding inexpensive used cars for international graduate students from the university where I worked. While scrolling through craigslist ads looking for a nice used Buick....there it was: "One owner, 40,000 mile Indy Fiero pace car. $900." I couldn't dial the numbers fast enough. Though it was after 9:00 at night and the man selling it assured me he wouldn't sell it, I insisted on driving the 30 minutes to his house that night. Though it was in sad shape from being abandoned outside for over a decade, it was complete and was a southern car so it had no rust on the parts of the car that weren't plastic. I negotiated the price to $700 including delivery to my house on the sellers trailer. Three weeks later after new calipers, a water pump, fuel pump, fuel injector, fresh tires, and a heavy duty cleaning, it hit the road. Now with 55,000 miles on it, it still drives like...well...a car with 55,000 miles on it. Though, it has its scars from the years of neglect, I've decided to not cosmetically restore it to perfection as its all original and in great condition for the circumstances.

I giggle every time I drive it (which is pretty often) as I think of the Lord's goodness to me in remembering the dream of a 12 year old and providing something I otherwise did not have the resources for. The college kids I work with think it's really cool too and it's a great prop for 80's parties. The framed print that hung over my bed now hangs beside "dreamcar" in his garage bay.
