It was the first day that my parent's Auburn speedster had been on the road since 1963: the month was August 1984. I had done the restoration on the car over a period of years--they got the car in 1951, and it had been used and variously restored a few times--and it was the first time in my adult life i'd seen the car all together.
Excited to take a first drive, Dad I and i hopped in the seat, with me driving. Dad had always told me the car always caused a stir, and in a few cases, bizarre behavior on the part of other drivers....boy, was he right!
I was heading north on the main road that was in front of our home and shop, and I was in the right lane. A young kid, in a souped-up Mustang, came up along side me, he on the left, and yelled out, "Hey Mister, nice c..." His last word was truncated by his *running into* the car in front of him....!!!
Dad, in his sage and quiet way, looked over at me and flatly said, "See what I mean?"
I treasure that moment, since the car and my parents have both departed my compnay.
