John P 1964 Chevrolet El Camino 2dr Pickup

Take it to Sturgis

I found my 1964 El Camino after moving to Ft. Worth Tx. from Chicago, and bought it for $450.00. It was 1982 and I was 21yrs old. I fell in love with the Box style 64/65 Chevelles when I inherited my grandfathers 64, 4 door Malibu when I turned 16. My fathers second new car was a 65 Chevelle Malibu, so, you can see the attraction. When I spotted this one, I had to have it, after loosing my first Chevelle to my foolish teenage troublemaker ways. But that's a whole other story. It was 1997 and I had just dropped my 3rd motor into the El Camino. The original 283 had worn out and I'd blown up a 350 4 bolt main, horsing around. This was a 305 that had run hot at the race track. A simple set of rings, bearings and gaskets got it up and running. A friend of mine said to me, "if it"ll make it down the block it ought ta make it across the country. With that thought in mind, a plotted out a run to Sturgis South Dakota for the 57th M/C Rally. I was riding a 1972 Ironhead Sportster XLCH at the time, with only a kickstarter. Anyone who know this bike understands how hard a 1500 mile ride would be. So I decided to load it into the El Camino and head out. My riding companion, Cowboy, took his Shovelhead Harley and pulled a trailer behind it. Off we went, the first problem was that I didn't vent the crankcase and blew out my fuel pump, but we fixed that easily enough in Amarillo, Tx. Next thing to go out was the charging system and I fixed that in Fort Collins Colorado. We finally arrive 3 days later, unloaded the Ironhead and spent an awesome week riding in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The motor was just breaking in and ran great all the way back to Texas. I've still got it, 32 years now. It's ready for anothe motor and paint job and, and, and ......
