I remember going to my mechanic, who was a family friend, and asking him what I could work on and what was best to let him do. From there, I would look through local wrecking yards for spare parts. I would then bring them home and my dad and I would open up the shop book and spend double the normal time replacing simple items like a radiator and thermostat. It was an adventure and since I was young and didn't have a family I could afford the time. I learned a lot doing the simple repairs. I remember trying to convince the mechanic I could replace the flywheel. He just laughed and said "not in a million years". He then proceeded to tell me how he was going to do it and I agreed completely!
